Abstract

The article under discussion is intended to study the comic implication of Charles Dickens’ novel “Our Mutual Friend”, its functions and role in the text. A detailed consideration is given to such ways of achieving a comic effect as misunderstandings and repetitions, thanks to which the characters of the novel represent this or that deviant behavior appearing in unusual circumstances and surroundings, and a high interest is paid to simple everyday situations and phenomena. The urgency of this article is determined by the intensity of the content, insufficient study of the novel, a thorough analysis of which will allow interpreting the novel’s implicit information adequately and unfolding the author’s conceptual idea. The study of the reception of “Our Mutual Friend” in a foreign language audience and its translation interpretations seems to be interesting, essential and required, since it is focused on achieving practical results that can be implemented in translation practice.

Key words: comic, implicit information, author’s conceptual idea, functions of the comic.
