Abstract

This study examines Murat Auezov’s 1976 article “Enkidiada: On the Problem of the Unity of the Worlds of Nomadism and Sedentarism” as a postcolonial intervention. The analysis focuses on Auezov’s interpretation of Enkidu, the hero of the Epic of Gilgamesh, as the image of the Other. A brief review of the literature demonstrates the originality of Auezov’s interpretation of Enkidu and suggests that, before the emergence of postcolonial theory and its conceptual framework, he had intuitively identified a number of issues that later became central to the postcolonial approach. The article also examines the historical context and the conditions of scholarly knowledge production that shaped Auezov’s work. This context explains both Auezov’s engagement with the figure of Enkidu and the censorship authorities’ decision to ban a book that had already been published. The study is situated within the framework of postcolonial theory and employs interpretive, intentional, and contextual methods of analysis. The aim of the article is to examine Auezov’s work through the lens of postcolonial theory. The findings suggest that Auezov presents Enkidu as a symbol of the civilizational Other, while the text itself constitutes an attempt to challenge the ideas of the dominant Soviet cultural paradigm.
