Abstract

lines of the body of the Neo, lying motionless in the laboratory on the ship of Morpheus «Nebu-chadnezzar», almost exactly repeat the outlines of the body of the dead Christ in the famous picture by Hans Holbein the Younger «The Dead Christ in the Tomb» (1521). This visual quote correlates logically with the concept of the film «The Matrix»: Neo is a new Messiah who must transform the virtual world, and his transition from the virtual world of the «matrix» to the real world is interpret-ed in the paradigm of the motifs of death and resurrection. The ideological (and plot) motivation of this quote is obvious: to create a visual image of the dead Messiah, who is soon to be resurrected. This visual quote is on one list with other biblical quotes and reminiscences in the film «The Matrix».
