The article discusses the formation of a unit of measurement, its operational nature, semantic groups of measurement names. One of the components of the linguistic picture of the universe – the names of measurement – is a phenomenon based on a universal concept and representing a national concept. Any thing has its own size in a certain volume. That is, there can be no measureless world. The names of measurements are formed and developed as a result of the development of society. The article highlights the close connection of the names of measurements that are used in measuring space, distance, volume, length, depth with the life of the people, as well as the fact that humanity has long formed the concept of measurement when predicting and evaluating a particular size, intuitively measuring distance, volume, depth. The concept of "measure" in Kazakh and French is studied as part of philosophical categories and as a language category.
