Abstract

In the article, the authors presented a continuation of their 2016 study, the purpose of which was to identify and study current trends in the use of Kazakh, Russian and other languages by students. For this purpose, the authors conducted a survey among students of some universities in Almaty (Republic of Kazakhstan) with different languages of instruction. In the article, the authors present the results of a survey, the purpose of which is to track which languages Kazakh students prefer to use in everyday life, study and informal communication. This survey continues the research conducted by the authors at uni-versities in Almaty in 2016. Having extensive practical experience in teaching Russian at a university, the authors certainly observe certain changes taking place in the language preferences of Kazakhstani students. The authors of the article conclude that the position of the Kazakh language as the state and main language of student training in higher educational institutions continues to strengthen. At the same time, there is a weakening of the position of the Russian language as the language of training of students at the university and a means of communication in the family and informal communication, however, it continues to be in demand for students as a means of obtaining additional information and a means of communication on the Internet.
