Abstract

This article explores how politicians‟ speeches reveal their views on tolerance and intolerance. Spe-cifically, the remarks made by Presidents D. Trump and J. Biden during initial debate was chosen. Tol-erance could be a condition and fundamental guideline of the political communication. Similar to this, actions of intolerance can also be a calculated tactic to undermine the opponent and establish one's own superiority. Politicians use a variety of speech acts, including threats, promises, apologies, and others, to incite society for their personal gain. The author's objective is to evaluate the president's language be-havior in terms of verbal acts that indicate tolerance or intolerance. The first debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden held September 29, 2020, is part of the corpus of study. The analysis‟s results dis-closed expressives like the procedural act, directives and commissives, declaratives and representatives, a number of which indirectly realized through other verbs.
